What Do Everton Need This Summer?

Everton over the past few years have always a top half team fighting to break into the top 6. Under Ronald Koeman they seem stronger than ever, and with a big name prolific striker scoring 20+ goals a season for them what’s missing and what do they need to do this summer as the Top 6 get ever stronger?

With Koeman losing his patience with Ross Barkley and Lukaku being linked back to Chelsea this could be a big pre-season for the club. Cashing in on a non consistent Barkley and using that money to strengthen the squad with an attacking midfield player who will work well with Lukaku would be a sensible move. The biggest thing being trying to keep a hold of Lukaku, but with big clubs offering more money, trophies and European football Everton may find that very hard in which case the best result would be to get a much money as they can for the player. And replacing him with a proven premier league goal scorer such as Jamie Vardy or Andre Grey would be a good bit of business.

Adding a replacement for Ross Barkley someone with a bit more flair and ability will get the fans going but their midfield is already in my opinion one of the best in the league, Idreesa Gueye and McCarthy can be essential players for any team with their box box abilities, and don’t forgot about the young Tom Davies.

Everton’s defence may be one of the more severe places to strengthen, The clubs defenders are about to pass their best and they need some young hungry players to help them out Browning and Holgate are good but they are unproven at the level Everton want to be at so grabbing a hold of another defender would be critical to the clubs future endevers.

Lastly they need a quaility goal keeper. The best thing Everton can do this window is bring in young Jordan Pickford from Sunderland. The 20 year old was one of two of the only stand out stars of a otherwise awful Sunderland squad, commanding his area and shouting out orders to premier league winning centre backs coming to the end of their careers shows this kid ain’t afraid to say what needs to be said at the back.

Everton have a big summer and we will all have to wait and see what pans out, what do you think Everton need to do this summer in the comments!

  1. Considering how poor Stekelenburg and Robles have been at times, a bid for Jordan Pickford is a must. He’s been the league’s best shot-stopped alongside Heaton and would be a strong contender for starting XI at about any Premier League club.

Defensively, I think the team is fine. It would’ve been a bonus if Koeman could sign a better centre-back partner for Ashley Williams than Funes Mori or Jagielka, but it’s not the biggest concern unless he wants to experiment with 3-4-3.

When it comes to Ross Barkley’s departure, I honestly don’t think it’s going to harm Toffees in the long run. He’s had another disappointing season, he’s hardly moving forward and played very poorly in derby. Gylfi Sigurðsson would be a dream upgrade here.

Last, but not least: Lukaku. He’s leaving and will likely be impossible to replace. Everton simply don’t have the buying power to get an equally prolific goalscorer. In a perfect world, I’d see class strikers like Schalke’s Burgstaller or Hoffenheim’s Kramarić arriving to Goodison Park, but even that could be difficult to push through.
